WELCOME FROM THE CHIEF RESIDENTS

Dear Future (Stanford) Radiology Residents,

Thank you for your interest in the Stanford Radiology Residency Program! Stanford Radiology is a world-renowned program which offers the best in education, research, and technology combined with the natural beauty and lifestyle that comes with living in the Bay Area.

Excellence in education and research has long been a top priority for our program. In addition to a large volume and wide variety of cases, we have the opportunity to learn from some of the nation’s experts in radiology, many of whom are nationally recognized for their research and who lead and participate in all major radiology societies. These opportunities come during side-by-side readout, protected Thursday lecture block conferences, and division-specific educational conferences. In addition to standard didactic and case conferences, our lectures have adapted to changing requirements by gamifying case-taking, incorporating peer-led case presentations, and creating block conferences that dovetail educational material for improved learning and retention.

We celebrate the rich tapestry of diversity that defines our residency, with a long-standing commitment to recruiting individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, life experiences, and intellectual ideas. Our Women in Radiology group aims to support our female trainees by hosting events and providing mentorship by our many female attending radiologists. We have a close relationship with the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE), a group that was founded and led by one of our attending radiologists. In addition, we have resident representatives on the GME Diversity Committee, a resident and fellow-led committee that focuses on recruitment, inclusion, professional development, and mentorship of diverse GME trainees.

Our residency thrives on community-building to cultivate an inclusive and supportive environment for residents, faculty, and staff. The strong sense of camaraderie within and between different residency classes has helped to create a friendly and collegial environment both within and outside of the reading room. Generally, our residents and attendings are on a first-name basis and will frequently meet up after work, with the attending radiologists collectively endeavoring to create an environment that fosters both friendship and mentorship between trainees and faculty.

The combination of our strong educational curriculum, diverse intellectual resources and expansive experience in radiology residency training has empowered our residents to explore their passions both in and outside of radiology. Many of our residents have led initiatives spanning areas in research, quality improvement, global health, and leadership, including department-wide projects in Women in Radiology and other hospital-wide diversity initiatives. In support of this is our unique RadCombinator program, which allows residents protected time during the work week to focus on research or non-clinical endeavors.

While we prioritize resident education and development, we also believe in the importance of work-life balance and enjoying the many wonderful things that the Bay Area has to offer, including the local beaches, hiking trails through the redwoods, the city of San Francisco, Napa wine country, Lake Tahoe, and Yosemite, just to name a few.

We wish you the best of luck as you search for the residency that best fits your needs and are hopeful to see you at Stanford in the future!

Regards,

Shelby, Wenhui, and Cameron
