Radiology Residency Program

Welcome from Chief Residents

Dear Radiology Residency Applicants,

Congratulations on selecting one of the most dynamic, intellectually challenging, and high- impact medical specialties. We warmly welcome you to the Stanford University Department of Radiology, a place where great ideas are born and transferred to clinical medicine. Like our neighbors in Silicon Valley, we are constantly introducing innovations into our daily practice. Our residents are a diverse group of physicians who hail from both coasts and everywhere in between and have pursued undergraduate majors spanning from English to engineering. In addition to demonstrating excellence at their respective medical schools, they have been recognized for their achievements in fields ranging from the basic sciences and the business sector to political advocacy and community service.

Just as importantly, our residents each find unique ways to take advantage of the perfect, sunny California weather and beautiful terrain. We have surfers, skiers, triathletes, and mountain climbers who complement their athletic pursuits with relaxation at world-renowned Bay Area restaurants and cultural events. Residents get together to play many team sports, including basketball, flag football, and softball, or to escape for getaways to the wine country, the ocean, or the exhilarating vistas at Yosemite.

Despite this tremendous diversity in backgrounds and interests, Stanford Residents share a common drive to excel as radiologists. We aim to attract the future leaders of the field--those who will make a difference in clinical care, or with their research discoveries, or both. Stanford faculty take a personal interest in teaching and mentoring our residents, and the camaraderie across generations is one of the best parts of our residency training program.

That is high praise given that our rich tradition includes the development of many of the innovative procedures, techniques, and technologies used throughout radiology. At present, we are in an exciting growth phase with the recent addition of three new world-class facilities including a first-of-its-kind outpatient imaging center built to increase direct interaction between radiologists and their patients; unique research facilities developing the tools of molecular imaging and early diagnostics; as well as a cutting-edge radiology engineering research center.

Most importantly, our Department has always placed a premium on people, and we have always sought to recruit the best and the brightest. So it’s with a sense of both excitement and pride that we remind you that YOU are our future. We invite you to take a closer look at our program, and we hope that you will embrace the challenges of radiology with the same vigor as those who came before you. We look forward to welcoming you to the Stanford Radiology family.

Best of Luck,
